Gemlore
The traditional birthstone for the month of August and the gemstone for the Astrology sign of Libra 23 September-23 October. The perfect gift for a friend or loved one.
Peridot is an ancient gemstone used by Egyptians from around 1500 BC. Associated with light, the stone was known as 'gem of the sun' and some believed a Peridot talisman could protect the wearer from night terrors due to the stone’s ability to glow under candlelight at night.
Peridot is unusual in that it is formed deep in the Earth's magma whereas most gems are formed in the crust. It is brought to the surface by tectonic or volcanic activity.
Care for your gemstone
Peridot is rated 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs gem hardness scale with fair to good toughness (Diamond is 10). Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, acids or sudden temperature changes. To minimize scratching and wear, store Peridot jewellery separately in a soft velvet pouch or padded container.
