Unlike Australian opals that form in sedimentary layers, Ethiopian opals develop in volcanic rock, creating distinctive nodule-like, lump-shaped balls.

Care for your gemstone

Measuring 5.5-6.5 on the MOHS scale (Diamond being 10), Opal is a relatively soft gemstone. Ethiopian Opals are sensitive to chemicals, heat, temperature change and should be kept away from water. They should be removed before showering, cleaning, gardening or sports activities. To gently remove dirt and oils, clean with a soft, dry, untreated microfibre cloth.

Store separately in a soft velvet pouch or padded container, away from other pieces of jewellery to avoid scratches from metals and harder gemstones and away from moisture, humidity and direct sunlight.
